Is the Mobile Phone Becoming the New PC?

According to Google Chief Executive, Eric Schmidt, this may just be the case.  During a recent Mobile World Congress conference, Mr. Schmidt expressed that smartphones are beginning to surpass PC sales and that PC’s do not seem to be catching up.   As reported by Hispanic Business, Mr. Schmidt stated that “the phone has fulfilled Bill Gates prophecy that eventually people would have access to all of the world’s information at their fingertips.”

While smartphones are increasingly offering smart and innovative applications for accessing the Internet, at this point, I’d say that it is somewhat premature to say that smartphones will replace PC’s.  However, there is certainly a growing interest in this technology and it is enabling minority groups like Hispanics to get connected to the Internet.  However, encouraging greater adoption in homes is paramount for minority communities since, let’s face it, mobile broadband has its limitations for those who rely on the Internet for work and school – at least for the time being.
